Amazon India Vice President and Country Manager Samir Kumar said in a 15 September interview the company is moving toward 300 cities and more than 3,000 stores for quick commerce. It is expanding into 50-plus tier-II and tier-III cities in September after a Tirupati launch that saw 5x growth in 14 days. Dark stores focus on everyday essentials while urban fulfilment centres handle larger assortments for 25-30 minute delivery, drawing on Amazon’s 4.5 million item selection.

Amazon is building toward 300 cities and over 3,000 stores, adding micro-fulfilment centres for essentials and urban centres for wider range. September alone brings 50-plus smaller cities after early traction in Tirupati.

A rider in a tier-2 pin code now has another app promising free Prime speed on a deeper catalogue. Dark-store managers must keep the top 10,000-15,000 SKUs fresh or lose the basket to the new entrant’s larger back-end.

Amazon targets 300 cities and more than 3,000 stores for quick commerce.

The push squeezes pure-play quick-commerce margins already under investor scrutiny and forces Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart to defend share with assortment rather than pure discount. It also lifts demand for local warehouse labour and last-mile capacity.

Watch the festive order spike and any disclosure on actual dark-store count versus the multi-thousand target in the coming months.
