Avenue Supermarts on 21 August approved up to ₹500 crore fresh investment in Avenue E-Commerce, operator of DMart Ready. The unit already received ₹350 crore in FY26. Total capital deployed could near ₹2,000 crore as the chain scales home delivery.

Avenue E-Commerce posted ₹4,094 crore revenue in FY26, up 17% from ₹3,502 crore. Losses rose to ₹307 crore from ₹247 crore. The board cleared the cheque at the AGM held mid-week.

Shop-floor math is simple: dark-store and fulfilment costs still outrun basket contribution in newer cities. A rider in Pune or Ahmedabad now carries higher fixed overhead while average order values lag metro levels. Kirana competitors feel less heat until density improves.

Total capital in the online arm could near ₹2,000 crore.

The move helps DMart defend share against Blinkit and Zepto without full quick-commerce pivot. It squeezes pure-play online grocers on price while giving Reliance JioMart another scaled rival with everyday-low-price DNA.

Watch Q2 filings for burn rate and city additions. Festive window in October will test whether the fresh capital lifts same-day fill rates enough to cut losses.
