Carrefour soft-opened its first India store in Noida on 14 August and formally launched this week under a franchise with Dubai-based Apparel Group. The 50,000 sq ft outlet carries about 50,000 SKUs. The retailer plans roughly 50 stores across NCR and Uttar Pradesh over three to four years before wider expansion.
Carrefour exited India in 2014 after five cash-and-carry units. It is back with hypermarket, supermarket, gourmet and express options, starting with the large Noida format. Early sales have beaten internal expectations, according to partnership executives.
Shop-floor impact shows first in assortment depth and private-label pricing that undercuts pure play hypermarkets on staples while matching fresh produce. A kirana next door loses basket share on bulk rice and oil once the new till lines open.
Physical stores still have a role even as quick commerce reshapes grocery.
Reliance Smart Bazaar and DMart face denser competition in NCR clusters. Quick-commerce dark stores lose some high-value weekly top-ups if Carrefour nails two-hour click-and-collect.
Watch the next three to four NCR openings before Diwali 2026 and any filing on franchise economics from Apparel Group.
