DMart, Reliance Retail, Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart have capped sugar purchases at 2-5 kg per customer or order since 26-27 August as stocks tighten ahead of Raksha Bandhan and the broader festive window. All-India average retail price reached ₹65.05 per kg on 26 August, up sharply from around ₹48 a month earlier.

Offline stores limit buyers to roughly 2-3 kg per invoice in several cities. Blinkit allows one 5 kg pack in Delhi-NCR for select brands; Zepto and Instamart restrict to one or two 1 kg packs. The caps aim to stretch existing inventory rather than signal outright stock-outs.

Kirana owners and dark-store pickers now face more customer queries and smaller basket sizes on a high-velocity SKU. A till that once cleared 10 kg bags now processes multiple small tickets, raising handling cost per kilo.

Retailers like DMart and Reliance have capped sugar at around two or three kg per person.

The rationing helps organised players manage allocation while pressuring unorganised wholesalers who thrived on bulk festive lifts. Private-label sugar programmes at DMart and Reliance gain relative shelf space.

Watch government import arrivals and any further price-stabilisation steps before the main Navratri-Diwali build-up.
