A CLSA report released 26 August found Flipkart Minutes operating 627 dark stores across Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Gurugram, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, edging past Swiggy Instamart’s 615. The platform also leads Instamart on pincode coverage in those markets.

Blinkit still dominates with 969 stores, or about 27 per cent of the 3,536 dark stores mapped in the ten cities. Zepto holds 828 and BigBasket 497. The tally excludes Amazon and JioMart.

For the merchant the number decides who gets the prime slot in the 10-minute catalogue. Denser stores mean faster rider turns and fewer stock-outs at the dark-store pick face, directly lifting conversion on high-margin beauty and snacks.

Within the top 10 cities, Flipkart Minutes has already surpassed Swiggy Instamart in both dark-store count and pincode coverage.

Instamart’s recent densification push is now under pressure; Swiggy must fill the new stores or watch adjusted EBITDA losses widen. Blinkit benefits from the overall category heat while smaller D2C brands gain another listing door.

Next checkpoint is September order-density data and any festive inventory commitments. Under-utilised stores will hit P&L first.
