The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has initiated penal action against Amazon, Bigbasket, Flipkart, Swiggy Instamart and Zepto for food safety and regulatory non-compliances including misbranding and sale of prohibited articles. The move follows heightened inspections of dark stores as the platforms expand. Separate state actions earlier suspended licences at multiple Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart-linked sites.

FSSAI has penalised the major quick-commerce and e-commerce grocery platforms over misbranding, misleading claims and prohibited or unsafe food items sold online. The action comes amid rising scrutiny of dark-store hygiene and labelling. Earlier Maharashtra FDA suspended licences at 14 establishments linked to the three pure-play q-comm players after inspecting 86 sites.

On the ground a dark-store picker or rider now faces tighter batch checks and possible temporary SKU delistings, slowing order fill rates during peak evening slots. Kirana-linked suppliers feeding these hubs must upgrade packaging and documentation or lose listings.

FSSAI action hits Amazon, Flipkart, Instamart and Zepto over dark-store food safety lapses.

The penalties squeeze pure-play q-comm margins already under pressure from discounting while giving traditional grocery retailers and better-compliant platforms a temporary compliance edge. It also raises costs for marketplace sellers of packaged foods.

Watch further state-level sealing orders and any festive-season enforcement drive; platforms will need cleaner dark-store audits before the main Diwali delivery surge.
