Reliance Retail and 7-Eleven have ended their five-year master franchise after the venture failed to turn profitable. Nearly 60 stores, mostly in Mumbai and Pune, are shutting, with the last 31 closed by end-September 2026. The unit posted about ₹92 crore revenue and nearly ₹90 crore net loss in the year to March 2026.

The partnership launched in 2021 peaked near 60 outlets before inventory clearance and final shutdowns. Employees are being absorbed into Reliance’s broader grocery formats.

A neighbourhood kirana owner now faces one less organised rival for impulse snacks and milk runs, while dark-store riders pick up the same basket in under 15 minutes. Till staff at remaining Reliance Smart points must push higher-margin private label to offset lost convenience traffic.

The venture made ₹92 crore revenue against a ₹90 crore loss before the shutters came down.

The exit helps pure quick-commerce players and traditional kiranas; it pressures other mid-size convenience experiments still seeking scale. Landlords in Mumbai-Pune lose a steady tenant class.

Watch any fresh 7-Eleven partner announcement and Reliance’s next grocery store-count update in the festive quarter filings.
