Reliance Retail closed all remaining 31 7-Eleven stores in Mumbai and Pune as of 30 September 2026, ending its master franchise with Japan’s Seven & i Holdings. The Japanese company confirmed the shutdown on 21 October. The 7-India Convenience Retail unit posted roughly ₹92 crore revenue and nearly ₹90 crore net loss for the year ended March 2026.
The five-year partnership that began after an earlier Future Retail deal terminated has fully wound down. Peak network had reached around 60 outlets before the final 31 were shuttered at end-September.
Convenience operators and landlords in those catchments now reassess small-format viability. A kirana or modern trade till nearby may pick up some impulse traffic, yet the specialised 24-hour model proved hard to profit at Indian rent and labour costs.
All 31 remaining 7-Eleven stores closed as of 30 September after nearly ₹90 crore FY26 loss.
The exit frees Reliance Retail capital and management bandwidth for its core grocery, fashion and quick-commerce plays while signalling to other global convenience brands that India unit economics remain tough without heavy localisation. It also leaves a small gap in organised late-night retail in two cities.
