Reliance Retail, Tata’s Trent and Aditya Birla fashion and lifestyle businesses together added 3,891 stores over the last three financial years, taking their combined count to 26,067 outlets, according to a 2 September report. Reliance alone ended FY26 with 20,160 stores after opening 1,564 in the year.

The three groups added 3,891 stores in three years, pushing the combined network to 26,067. Reliance’s FY26 tally reached 20,160 stores across 78.3 million sq ft, while Trent scaled from 590 to 1,286 stores including overseas units.

A store manager in a tier-2 high street now faces denser competition for the same catchment, with value formats and premium mono-brands both claiming space. Rental negotiations tighten when multiple conglomerate banners bid for the same mall bay.

Three groups added 3,891 stores and now run 26,067 outlets together.

The expansion helps organised retail capture share from unorganised kiranas and smaller chains, yet squeezes pure-play regional value retailers on both rent and private-label pricing power.

Watch the next quarterly store-addition numbers and any festive-season same-store sales commentary due in October filings.
