Zepto is cutting its Café footprint sharply to 250-350 outlets from 850-900 across cities, scaling back menus and selling equipment. The move, reported on 21 September, follows operational, hygiene and demand pressures that hit the expanded food offering.

Zepto is retrenching Zepto Café, bringing outlet count down to a range of 250-350 from the earlier 850-900. Menus are being slimmed and surplus kitchen gear put up for sale after the rapid build-out ran into execution snags.

Dark-store managers and café counters will feel the immediate P&L relief from lower rent and staffing, yet riders lose a high-frequency add-on order stream that once padded evening baskets. Kirana-adjacent quick-commerce nodes that hosted cafés now revert to pure grocery throughput.

Café count drops to 250-350 from nearly 900.

The cut helps Zepto conserve cash while it pressures smaller cloud-kitchen partners who relied on the platform’s volume. Rivals Blinkit and Instamart gain relative breathing room on the food-adjacent front without matching the same over-expansion.

Watch the festive order mix in the next two weeks and any further licence or hygiene filings that could force more closures before Navratri peaks.
