Amazon and Flipkart are accelerating dark-store build-out in India’s quick-commerce market and nearing the 1,000-store milestone, according to a Bernstein note dated 28 September 2026. Flipkart is broadly at the mark; Amazon could hit it by the festive window. Blinkit still leads with 45-55 percent order share.

Bernstein flagged that Flipkart Minutes and Amazon Now are closing in on 1,000 dark stores combined as they chase Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart. Competitive intensity on pricing has already eased slightly as the newer players focus on scale. Blinkit retains volume leadership.

Dark-store managers now juggle denser SKU lists and tighter rider rosters; a single extra 200 sq ft bay can cut delivery radius by a kilometre in dense pin codes. Unit economics improve only when orders per store clear the daily threshold.

Flipkart is broadly approaching the 1,000-store mark, while Amazon could potentially reach it by the festive season.

The build-out squeezes pure-play q-comm burn rates while giving marketplace giants a grocery and essentials wedge. Kirana suppliers gain volume but lose pricing power on high-velocity SKUs.

Next watch is the festive season order spike and any Q2 filings that reveal contribution margins once the 1,000-store base is live.
