The opening days of the 2026 festive season show clear premiumisation. Flipkart and Amazon both reported sharp rises in higher-value electronics, appliances and beauty even as non-metro traffic dominated. Department stores responded with experiential formats that prioritise service and design over discount density.

Numbers from the first hours confirm the shift. Concurrent users, doubled orders and 70 percent premium smartphone growth arrived together with Tier-III demand. Average order values are rising even as volume stays broad.

On the shop floor this means more trained staff, better fitting rooms and tighter inventory of high-margin SKUs. Dark stores must stock premium variants that move fast under 15-minute promises. Riders carry heavier, higher-value parcels.

Shoppers are using discounts and EMI to upgrade, not just to buy more cheap units.

Value-only private labels and pure discounters lose relative share. Financing partners, premium brands and mall anchors gain. Quick-commerce players that stay grocery-only miss the upgrade basket.

The next test is the main Diwali week and early wedding bookings. Watch whether premium mix holds after the deepest discounts fade and whether physical flagships convert the same aspirational traffic offline.
