Reliance Retail, Tata’s Trent and Aditya Birla fashion-lifestyle arms together opened 3,891 stores between March 2023 and March 2026, taking their combined count to 26,067. Reliance accounted for more than half with 2,120 additions and closed FY26 at 20,160 stores spanning 78.3 million sq ft. Trent reached 1,286 stores including six in the UAE. The numbers landed in a 2 September report tracking the physical footprint race.

Reliance Retail’s FY26 store count hit 20,160 after 1,564 openings in the year alone. Trent added 696 stores over the three years while the two Aditya Birla retail entities contributed 1,075. The push has taken organised formats well beyond metros into tier-2 and tier-3 catchments.

On the shop floor this means denser competition for mall and high-street leases. A kirana next to a new Zudio or Smart Bazaar now faces sharper price and assortment pressure on everyday apparel and grocery staples. Dark-store operators also feel the rent squeeze as pure-play retailers lock larger footprints.

Reliance alone added 2,120 stores in three years to reach 20,160 outlets.

The expansion helps landlords fill space but squeezes pure online players who lack physical density for last-mile. It also raises the bar for smaller regional chains that cannot match the capital outlay.

Watch the next quarterly store-addition numbers and any festive-season same-store sales commentary due around Diwali filings.
