Strong top-line updates mask the real fight: store productivity in smaller cities and the rising cost of keeping dark stores clean.

Trent’s 23% revenue jump and Zudio’s 1,000-store milestone show value fashion still works, yet productivity at newer outlets remains the open question. At the same time FSSAI and state actions against quick-commerce dark stores raise the compliance bill just as festive orders spike. Mall space stays scarce, pushing more brands onto high streets.
Retailers enter the core festive weeks with better demand signals than six months ago. Trent, D-Mart, Nykaa and others have already posted solid Q2 numbers even with the calendar shift. The volume is there.
The shop-floor reality is tougher. A new Zudio in a tier-3 town needs higher stock turns to justify the rent, while a Zepto or Instamart dark store now carries extra audit and packaging costs after the latest penalties. Every delayed picker or delisted SKU hits the same evening peak that used to print easy contribution.
Volume has returned; the fight is now over productivity and compliance cost per order.
This dynamic helps organised players with tight private-label control and hurts pure aggregators still scaling on discount. It also hands an edge to retailers who already own compliant supply chains and flexible store formats.
The next six weeks of festive sell-through and any further licence actions will show who converted traffic into clean margin and who merely bought growth.
