Two of India’s sharpest value machines just printed strong top lines and fresh store counts, yet DMart shares keep making new lows and every competitor is racing the same sub-₹1,000 customer. The question for merchants is simple: how many more outlets can the model absorb before the till stops compensating for wage and competitive pressure.

DMart’s 15 new stores and Trent’s Zudio milestone show the physical footprint is still the growth lever. Same-store numbers remain positive, but margins are already giving ground to entry-level wages and the need to hold MRP.

A store manager now juggles higher staff costs against the daily need to look cheaper than the nearest dark store on staples and basics. One missed price match and the weekly shopper shifts the basket.

The physical footprint is still the growth lever, but margins are already giving ground.

This dynamic squeezes Vishal, V-Mart and the new OWND! and Yousta formats hardest; they lack DMart’s scale or Zudio’s fashion velocity. It also hands quick-commerce platforms a clearer lane on the urgent, smaller ticket.

The next eight weeks of festive trading and the Q3 store-addition commentary will show whether density still pays or whether the industry has to slow the openings to protect the P&L.
