A Karnataka consumer commission has directed Zudio to pay ₹30,000 after ruling that a ₹10 charge for a carry bag constitutes unfair trade practice and violates the Sale of Goods Act. The order surfaced in reports dated around 23 August.

The commission held that charging separately for a bag after the merchandise sale is not permissible. Zudio, Trent’s value format that keeps most prices under ₹999, must comply in the state. Similar complaints have cropped up at other mass retailers.

At the till the extra ten rupees is pure margin on high-volume days. A store manager in Bengaluru now risks both the fine and social-media pile-on if staff continue the practice. Inventory teams already refresh weekly; bag policy becomes another operational check.

Charging ₹10 for a carry bag ruled unfair trade practice.

The ruling helps consumer groups and pressures V-Mart, Reliance Trends and other value players to absorb bag costs. It slightly helps premium formats that already include packaging.

Watch for appeals or copycat orders in other states before the festive rush. Any company-wide policy change would show up in Trent’s next operational update.
