Confederation of All India Traders said on 2 November that the INDIA bloc rally caused an estimated ₹10,000-11,000 crore loss with roughly 2.5 lakh of 3 lakh shops in affected markets remaining closed. Around 20 to 25 major markets near Ramlila Maidan were hit and about 5,000 vehicles could not move goods from industrial areas to Old Delhi and Central Delhi markets.

Traders cited panic over expected crowds and vehicle influx rather than formal orders as the main reason for the shutdowns. Historic markets that normally see heavy daily footfall stayed shuttered for the day.

A typical kirana or wholesale stall in Chandni Chowk lost an entire day’s turnover plus the cost of unsold perishables. Riders and tempo operators who service those markets sat idle, cutting last-mile cash flow.

About 80% of these shops—roughly 2,50,000 out of 3,00,000—remained closed today.

Organised retail chains with stores on the periphery felt secondary traffic drop while pure online players saw a temporary order spike. The episode underlines how single-day political events still disrupt physical retail cash cycles more than digital ones.

Watch restocking patterns and any formal compensation demand in the coming week; festive inventory build-up for Diwali will show whether the one-day hit lingers in working-capital numbers.
