Reliance Retail’s 24.3% profit decline to ₹2,611 crore in Q2, despite 6.4% gross revenue growth and 303 new stores, lays bare the price of building digital commerce while festivals slip into the next quarter. EBITDA margin contracted 120 basis points. The same pattern will hit every platform chasing 30-minute delivery this season.

Profit fell because digital investments, input-cost absorption and the festive calendar shift landed together. JioMart still grew revenue 42%, proving demand exists. Offline profits are explicitly funding the online build.

A dark-store manager now runs tighter labour rosters to protect unit economics while order volumes spike only later. Till operators in large-format stores see discretionary categories wait for the real festive rush.

Planned investments in digital commerce and the shift in the festive season weighed on margins.

Pure-play quick-commerce firms face the same margin squeeze without an offline cash cow. Traditional retailers that delay their own hyper-local response lose relevance faster.

The December quarter filing and actual Diwali-to-New Year GMV numbers will show who absorbed the cost and who simply postponed the pain.
