Five-year convenience franchise ends after losses as kiranas and quick commerce squeeze branded neighbourhood formats.

Reliance Retail and 7-Eleven are ending their five-year India franchise partnership, with most of the nearly 60 convenience stores set to shut. The venture posted about ₹92 crore revenue and nearly ₹90 crore net loss in the year ended March 2026. A handful of outlets are clearing stock before closure.
Reliance Retail is winding down the 7-Eleven network after the format failed to turn profitable. Most of the nearly 60 stores, concentrated in Mumbai, will close; a few are first selling remaining inventory. The 2021 deal never reached the scale needed to cover branded operating costs.
Kirana owners on the same high streets keep longer hours at lower overhead while Blinkit and Zepto riders pull the same snack and essentials baskets in minutes. A single 7-Eleven till could not match either the neighbourhood trust or the dark-store speed on identical SKUs.
Most of nearly 60 Reliance 7-Eleven stores shut after ₹90 crore loss.
The exit helps pure quick-commerce players and traditional kiranas that already own the immediate-need occasion. It pressures other organised convenience experiments and leaves 7-Eleven hunting a possible new local partner.
Watch any residual store clearances this month and Reliance’s next neighbourhood format filing. Festive demand data will show how much of the lost convenience volume shifts to JioMart or dark stores.
