Why value fashion is killing the mid-market till

Zudio’s 1,000-store machine and copycat formats leave traditional mid-price apparel with nowhere to stand this festive season.

Zudio’s march past 1,000 stores and 23% revenue growth at Trent has forced every mid-market apparel counter to defend price points that no longer hold. Yousta, Intune and Style Up now crowd the same ₹199-999 band. Shoppers have moved; the old full-price rack has not.

Trent’s Zudio format refreshed weekly under ₹999 and turned value into habit. Peers answered with their own low-price banners across 200-plus cities. Mid-market brands that once sat between discount and premium now watch conversion collapse at the till.

A shop-floor associate at a legacy lifestyle store sees the same customer walk in, check the Zudio price on the phone, and leave. One lost full-price shirt sale funds less inventory refresh than three value units across the road.

Value formats have turned the mid-market price point into a no-man’s land.

Premium counters at Westside or multi-brand sites gain from the split while pure mid-market players and their mall landlords lose traffic density. Private-label value lines become the only defence left for many.

Watch festive sell-through data in November and any mid-market chain’s next store-closure or repositioning note. The window will confirm how many racks survive the under-₹999 reset.
