Reliance Retail and 7-Eleven have ended their five-year India franchise, shutting the remaining stores after the venture posted roughly ₹92 crore revenue and a nearly ₹90 crore net loss in the year to March 2026. Most of the nearly 60 outlets have already closed or are clearing stock. The exit underscores the squeeze on standalone convenience between traditional kiranas and 10-minute delivery.

The last 31 7-Eleven stores are winding down after the partnership failed to reach profitability, according to people familiar with the matter and financial statements. A handful continue inventory clearance before final shuttering.

On the ground the format could not beat the kirana’s credit and proximity or the quick-commerce rider’s speed on snacks and essentials. A dark store three minutes away made the fixed-rent convenience box uncompetitive on the same basket.

The closure frees Reliance to double down on its core grocery and fashion engines while leaving 7-Eleven hunting a new local partner. It pressures other convenience experiments and validates Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart’s hold on immediate needs.

Watch whether any residual sites convert to Reliance Smart or Jio formats and 7-Eleven’s next India move before the next quarterly cycle.
