Value fashion is rewriting the mid-market P&L

Zudio-style private-label volume at sub-₹999 is forcing department stores and mid brands to choose between premiumisation or exit.

India’s fashion market is splitting cleanly between high-velocity value formats and true premium, leaving the old mid-market squeezed. Trent’s Zudio, now past 1,000 stores with 16 per cent group growth, and peers like V-Mart demonstrate that sub-₹999 private label with weekly drops can deliver both scale and margins that traditional department stores no longer match.

Zudio and similar plays keep 85-99 per cent of sales in own labels, turning inventory in under 15-20 days and selling most goods at full price. That model funds rapid Tier-2 expansion while rents and wages rise.

A typical mid-market shop floor still carries brand concessions, longer inventory cycles and markdown pressure. The till rings slower on the same square foot when shoppers walk next door for a ₹499 tee that looks current.

Value formats have turned accessible fashion into a high-velocity, full-price habit.

Reliance’s Yousta, Shoppers Stop’s Intune and Aditya Birla formats feel the volume drain; pure premium and luxury counters gain from the polarisation. D2C brands without offline density lose the middle ground.

The next test is festive sell-through data and any mid-market store closures or private-label ramps reported in October-November filings.
