Value fashion’s easy density is over; the capital is moving to higher baskets just as competition floods the same towns.

Trent’s decision to fund 100 Westside stores a year with ₹2,500 crore while Zudio already sits above 1,000 outlets is not a victory lap. It is an admission that pure value throughput in new cities is softening and margins need defending. Like-for-like at the value end has cooled to low single digits.
Zudio’s 1,000-store crossing came with clear caveats: newer non-metro sites deliver lower throughput and overall growth guidance has been cut toward 15-17%. Westside’s larger format and private-label mix offer higher baskets and better gross margins.
A mall landlord in a tier-2 city now chooses between another Zudio-style box and a full Westside that pulls beauty and home. The latter pays higher rent and stays longer. Private-label factories face the same fork—volume at thin margin or fewer doors at better realisation.
Capital is rotating from Zudio speed to Westside density because the easy value gains are done.
Reliance Yousta and Aditya Birla Style Up are already hunting the same catchments. Quick commerce further chips the low-ticket apparel run. Trent’s raise buys time; it does not remove the overcrowding.
The test arrives in the next two festive quarters: Westside opening velocity versus Zudio same-store recovery. If LFL stays muted, more capital will follow the premium path and value fashion will consolidate faster than expected.
